SUMMARY:

A Senior Digital Compositor’s role is to oversee and execute composition services for multiple or large projects. Responsibilities include communicating and collaborating at all times with project production leads and service group managers to meet schedule requirements, product quality and specifications in line with company objectives.

A Senior Compositor may at any time also act as primary and solitary lead on any project. A Senior Digital Compositor is also responsible for maintaining and distributing current project information and materials (such as visual specs) to allow for execution of original file construction and subsequent proof rounds with the most recent project specifications. A Senior Digital Compositor must have knowledge of leading projects that include multi-departmental workflows.

Composition services consist of building and editing pages digitally using page layout applications such as Adobe InDesign CS3/CS4/CS5 as well as prepare and/or edit art files in supporting applications such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. Page and art files are composed/edited following client supplied cookbooks and visual specs adhering to Element’s standard operating procedures and NASTA specs, when necessary, ensuring the highest quality product possible.

With consideration to the dynamics of our business and services, with a focus on the needs of our markets and customers, employees are often asked and relied upon to perform a variety of tasks throughout our service areas on a daily basis. While you have been assigned to a specific department and job function, you may be asked to participate in other services areas by management to meet client needs or to maximize Element’s performance.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work daily with all department leads to ensure project goals are met from launch to final deliverable.
  • Perform and maintain constant evaluations on file matter released from clients to element noting resolution, color space, naming convention, folder hierarchy, etc.
  • Ensure all file matter released to the printer and/or client meet the necessary construction integrity following Element’s checklists, established procedures and client guidelines and requirements.
  • Compose and edit pages according to project specifications and page layout standards.
  • Prepare and edit art, illustration and/or photo images/files.
  • Maintain and update notes on any new processes, applications, procedures, technology, etc.
  • Maintain and update own binders as well as distribute project information including global spec changes.
  • Call, when necessary, and attend team meetings to discuss project issues and requirements.
  • Offer suggestions to workflow processes when necessary.
  • Printers/copiers: share responsibility of alerting IT when a service call is necessary.


 

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires 5-10 years industry experience.
  • Must have thorough knowledge of textbook publishing standards including fonts, NASTA specifications, color space/theory, fonts, text coding/tagging, page composing, page editing, proofreading marks, electronic file formats, basic PDF creation, etc.
  • Must have a high level work ethic that shows commitment to personal performance, product quality, and client satisfaction.
  • Must have proven written and verbal communication skills while working in a team environment or with clients.
  • Must have thorough knowledge and utilization of templates, visual specs/cookbooks, master pages, etc.
  • Must have the ability to understand and monitor deliverable schedules and
  • Must have thorough knowledge using plug-ins such as InMath and PowerMath,
  • Must have working knowledge of Macintosh systems, Microsoft Word and Excel and e-mail applications.
  • Must offer written communication skills.
  • Must understand the value and expectations of internal and external customers.
  • Must be optimistic, organized, and process driven.
